There is a familiar shape to education technology on this continent. Someone identifies a real gap, builds a focused app to close it, launches to genuine enthusiasm, and watches usage fall away over the following two terms. The app was not bad. It solved one moment in a learner's life and had no relationship with any of the others.
We looked at that pattern for a long time before building anything, because the failure is instructive. It is not a failure of product quality. It is a failure of scope.
Learning is not one moment
A student preparing for an exam is doing several different things: understanding a topic for the first time, practising it, testing whether the practice worked, revising it weeks later, and eventually being assessed on it formally by someone else.
Most tools pick one of those and own it. A quiz app. A notes app. A video library. Each one is useful in isolation and none of them knows what the others did. The student carries the integration burden themselves, which is exactly the burden they are least equipped to carry, and the tool that demands the most effort is the one that gets abandoned first.
Meanwhile the teacher has no view of any of it, and the institution has no view of the teacher. Three parties, three disconnected experiences, one learner falling through the gaps between them.
An app improves a moment. Infrastructure connects the moments, which is where learning actually happens.
Three platforms, one layer
BVM Learning is built as three platforms because there are genuinely three different users with three different jobs, not because three products are easier to market than one.
Mytuta, for the learner
Mytuta is an AI-powered study and revision companion for students and teachers, live at mytuta.org. It turns a school topic into a complete learning experience: notes, quizzes, flashcards, practice and guided revision, all attached to the same topic rather than scattered across five services.
The design principle is that a student should never have to assemble their own study workflow. Understanding, practising and revising a topic should be one continuous path, because for the student it is one continuous problem.
SphereSDS, for the institution
SphereSDS is an interactive learning, assessment and training platform, live at spheresds.com. It gives educators, schools and institutions live sessions, formal assessments, asynchronous courses and training in one connected system.
This is the part most often missing. An institution that cannot run its assessments, its live teaching and its course material on the same system ends up with three records of the same student and no reliable picture of any of them. Delivery and measurement have to sit in the same place or measurement becomes fiction.
Pebble, for the youngest learners
Pebble is a guided learning world for children, built around stages, activities and safe interaction rather than an endless feed of content. Pebble Tab 1.0 is due in October 2026.
Children are already on devices. The question is not whether they should be, it is whether that time has a structure to it. Pebble exists to make the answer yes, with a calm interface, age-appropriate paths, and visibility for parents and educators into what the child is actually practising.
Building for the conditions that exist
A large share of African education technology is imported or built on imported assumptions: reliable broadband, a personal laptop, a learner who studies alone in a quiet room, a payment card. Those assumptions are not neutral. They quietly exclude most of the learners the product claims to serve.
With 77 percent of web traffic in Ghana arriving on a mobile device, the phone is not the fallback experience, it is the experience. Sessions get interrupted. Data is metered and rationed. A device is often shared between siblings, or between a student and a parent. A tool that assumes otherwise works beautifully in a demonstration and fails in a household.
Designing for those conditions is not a compromise on quality. It is the only version of quality that reaches anyone.
Why this connects to the rest of BVM
The same conviction runs through everything we build. Businesses do not lack ambition, they lack the systems that let them operate and be seen. Learners do not lack capability, they lack the structure that turns effort into measurable progress.
In both cases the fix is infrastructure: a connected layer that records what happened, makes it usable, and gives every party a view of the same reality. That is slower to build than a single app and considerably harder to explain. It is also the only thing that still matters in five years.
Which is why we did not build another education app.
